Blue Mountain Chalets
maintains a list of baby sitter's for
our guests.
BABYSITTING
The
purpose of this service is simply to provide added value to the stay of
our guests. This is a free service to our guests. We do our
best to ensure the match between our guests needs and the abilities and
requirements of both the children and the babysitter. We accept no
responsibility for either the conduct of our guests or the babysitter's
we recommend. This service is purely to help facilitate the match
of both the sitter and the parents.
It is our goal to enable our guests to enjoy time both with their
children, and private time alone as they please. By providing
local well thought of individuals that we trust, will provide
feelings of confidence and comfort in parents by providing them with
babysitter's we believe are realizable and can be trusted. It is
suggested a minimum of 24 hours notice. However we will attempt to
put parents together with available sitter's based on availability.

Here is what we look for
in our babysitter's;
Must have good health: Overall
health is important. Babysitter's are told not to accept jobs if they
have a cold or other contagious disease.
Be dependable & responsible:
Dependability is a must.
Love little children: The best
babysitters usually understand and love children. Children tend to know
whether you like them or not. Babysitter's are not put on our
recommendation list if we don't believe they have a genuine love for
children.
Be self-confident: Children
judge you as much by the way you look and act as by the words you say.
We look of confident individuals..
Be mature: They need to be
levelheaded and act calmly in an emergency. They have to maintain
authority and discipline. Emergency phone number's are asked to be given
out by parents. Blue Mountain Chalets also maintains a 24/7
emergency number and long office hours.
Show good manners: Our sitters
are expected to be pleasant, and act in a courteous manner. This
includes respect for the privacy of families by not going through
closets and personal possessions.
Be knowledgeable about children:
They need a basic understanding of the stages of child development. They
must also know the basic techniques of feeding, dressing, diapering,
bathing and playing with younger and older children.
Have a business-like attitude:
Our sitter's will confirm financial matters, prior to taking the jobs.
Should your agreement differ from our posted suggested rates we ask you
let our office know. In case of any disputes over rates, we will
assume our posted rates to be the agreed rates. Make sure there is
agreement on the business aspects of the job before babysitting begins
with a new family for the first time. Give the necessary information
from the parents before they leave.
Be adaptable: We try to
encourage our babysitter's to be adaptable and accept the differences
between households. It's your responsibility to fit in with the family's
usual pattern or routines — not the other way around. If you feel
uncomfortable with the family's lifestyle, you may need to refuse to
accept the opportunity to work for them.
Be safety conscious: Protect the
children from harm. Be alert at all times.
Baby Sitters
Guide
- Never leave children alone if
they are not capable of taking care of themselves
- Know your baby-sitter: choose a
person who has a sense of responsibility, a liking for children,
and, if possible, who lives in the same neighborhood.
- Review these guidelines with
your babysitter.
- Leave both written and oral
instructions with your baby-sitter, including: where you will be,
how you can be contacted (exact address, phone number) and when
you will return; the name, address and phone number of a
responsible neighbor to be contacted in an emergency; the complete
address of your residence; where the exits are located; where the
phone is located; how to call the fire department, police, or a
doctor in an emergency;
- Provide your baby-sitter with a
flashlight in case there is a power failure.
- If you smell smoke or gas, take
the children immediately to a safe location outside the building.
- Never waste time dressing the
children--a blanket will do, even in bad weather.
- Do not turn on any switches as
this may cause a spark and an explosion.
- NEVER go back into a burning
building for any reason whatsoever. Smoke and gas are dangerous,
even from a very small fire.
- Have a neighbor call the Fire
Department.
Remember -- Take The Children To A
Safe Location Outside The Building
Be responsible! Babysitting
is one of the biggest responsibilities you will ever take on. When
you baby-sit, the child's safety is in your hands. You must be
prepared to give the child your undivided attention. And if you are
going to take responsibility for a child's safety, you have to plan
ahead. The following precautions are simple, but very important.
Make sure you have an exit plan!
Every household should have one. Discuss the plan with the adults in
the house. Make sure you are familiar with their home, that you know
where all the exits are and how to unlock doors and windows.
Establish a meeting place outside the home so that you will know
that everyone is out safely.
Put away all matches and
lighters! Put them up high and out of sight of the child or
children you are looking after. Lock them away, if possible. Don't
smoke while you are babysitting. It is not only a bad example for a
child...it's a fire risk too.
Make the kitchen a safe place!
Cook only if you have permission from the adults in the household.
If you do cook, never leave the stove or the microwave unattended.
If you're cooking on the stove top, turn the handles of the pots and
pans in, pointing toward the centre of the stove. Make sure a child
cannot bump or grab a handle and spill the hot contents.
Be a Safety Scout! Check to
see if smoke alarms are installed and working at the house where you
are babysitting.
Children are curious by nature.
Check to see if safety covers are placed on electrical outlets that
are not in use so that a small child cannot stick something into
them.
Look at the house numbers
outside! Remember them. If they are not clearly visible from the
road, point it out to the adults of the household. It helps
emergency responders if the numbers can be seen, especially at
night.
Here's what to do
if there is a fire!
Get everybody out of the house and
stay out. Everybody should meet at the meeting place. If there is
smoke, try to use another exit route. If you can't use one, crawl
low, under the smoke. Remember that heat and smoke rise. Call 911
from a neighbor's house. If you couldn't get the children out, tell
the person on the other end where the children are located inside
the house. Don't hang up until they tell you to. Watch the children
carefully while you are waiting for firefighters to arrive. Don't
let the little ones go near their house. After you call 911, you
should immediately contact the children's parents. Make sure they
leave you a number where they can be reached.
Following all these tips will make
you a better babysitter and parents will feel that their children
are safe in your care!
